For first responders, mental health is rarely experienced in a classroom or from behind a desk. It happens between calls, after difficult scenes, during long shifts, and sometimes years after an experience that never truly left.
Flight Medic Berry brings that frontline perspective into a room where conversations about mental health, advocacy, policy, and systems of care are taking place.
His message focuses on the realities that can be overlooked when we talk about first responder mental health from the outside—the cumulative weight of the job, the pressure to keep performing, the identity that becomes intertwined with the uniform, and the difficulty of asking for help when the culture has taught you to keep pushing.
This isn't about simply telling first responders to “take care of their mental health.” It’s about understanding why that can be so difficult in the first place, what meaningful support needs to look like, and how we can build systems that recognize the realities of the people they are designed to serve.
Bringing a frontline voice into these conversations matters. When lived experience becomes part of the discussion, we can move beyond assumptions and toward solutions that are more practical, informed, and relevant to the people doing the work.
NAMI SC 2026 is one more opportunity to bridge that gap—and to make sure first responders aren't just part of the mental health conversation, but are helping shape it.
A Growing National & International Platform
NAMI South Carolina is just one stop in an expanding year of speaking engagements for Flight Medic Berry. He is also scheduled to speak at CAWM 2026 in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada, and ECHO Philadelphia 2026, continuing to bring the first responder mental health conversation to audiences across the United States and Canada.
He is also completing his first book, My IFR Condition—a project that continues the same mission: bringing the realities of first responder mental health out of the shadows and into the conversation.
